Off Season
A group of friends are having a weekend getaway in the coastal outskirts of Maine and are descended upon in the middle of the night by a family of cannibals. And it is EXACTLY as horrifying as it sounds.
This is my very first horror review. Actually, this is my very first horror book. Not the usual reading pool I wade in. I liked it, in the most horrible way. I couldn't stop reading it, and I could not move forward with my life until I finished this book. I read it twice. I STILL think about this book, especially the ending, up to the very last line of the book. The foreboding was consuming. You know what is going to happen to these people, but you don't know to who or how it's going to end. Almost half the book is this eerie foreshadowing of what's to come. The gore was off the charts. I read the author's cut, and I'm glad I did. I also tried the audio version, and I just couldn't do it. The narrator's voice reminded me of the old Smucker's Jelly commercial guy and Jimmy Stewart, and it made the female dialogue unlistenable. I switched back to book format.
This book follows in the same vein as horror fests like The Devil's Rejects and The Hills Have Eyes and is perfect for those who love their gore with a heavy side of nail-biting anticipation.
Quick and Dirty: 5 stars. I can see why Stephen King is a fan of Ketchum. I would definitely recommend this book, if you can stomach it. Sorry, I had to!
